TruthTap ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our TruthTap browser extension ("Extension").

By installing and using the TruthTap Extension, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

Information We Do Not Collect

TruthTap does not collect or store:

Personally identifiable information (such as your name, email address, or other contact information)
Web browsing history
Your general website activity or keystrokes
Authentication information (such as passwords or login credentials)

Information We Process

We only process:

The specific text that you actively select and choose to fact-check
Your API key (if you provide one) for connecting to third-party AI services
Settings preferences you configure within the Extension
History of your fact-check results (stored locally on your device only)

How We Use Your Information

The text you select for fact-checking is transmitted to our fact-checking API services (Anthropic Claude and/or Perplexity AI) solely for the purpose of generating a fact-check result. This text is only used for the immediate fact-checking operation and is not stored by us beyond what is necessary for the functioning of the Extension.

Your API keys, if provided, are stored locally on your device using the secure Chrome Storage API and are only used to authenticate API requests to the respective services.

Data Storage

All Extension data, including settings and fact-check history, is stored locally on your device using the Chrome Storage API. We do not maintain a central database of your fact-checks or settings.

Third-Party Services

TruthTap uses third-party AI services (Anthropic Claude and Perplexity AI) to process fact-check requests. When you submit text for fact-checking, that text is sent to these services' APIs. Please refer to their respective privacy policies for information on how they handle data:

Browser Permissions

TruthTap requires certain browser permissions to function properly:

activeTab: To access the page you are currently viewing in order to select text for fact-checking and display results
storage: To save your preferences and fact-check history locally
scripting: To highlight fact-checked text and display results on webpages
sidePanel: To display detailed fact-check results in the browser side panel
contextMenus: To add a "Fact Check This" option to your right-click menu
Host permissions (api.anthropic.com and api.perplexity.ai): To communicate with our fact-checking API services

Data Security

We implement appropriate security measures to protect against unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, disclosure, or destruction of data. However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure.

Children's Privacy

Our Extension is not intended for use by children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
